For our Health, Safety and Environmental Department, we are looking for a:


SAFETY SPECIALIST


Description

The Safety Specialist plays a pivotal role in coordinating and overseeing Surmac’s Health and Safety ISO 45001:2018 performance, alongside developing and implementing strategies to ensure adherence to ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications. Is tasked with managing site Key Performance Indicators, supervising incident response. Additionally, the Safety Specialist proactively designs systems to prevent incidents, ensure precise reporting, engage in investigative processes, and deliver site-specific training. Integrates HSE and quality seamlessly into daily operations, foster relationships with stakeholders, advocate for compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and administer protocols and inspections to uphold a safe environment for all stakeholders, while also providing support to the HSE Superintendent as needed.


Job Duties/ Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Coordinate and monitor Surmac’s Health and Safety ISO 45001:2018 performance. This includes recommending actions and programs for improvement, following up on audit recommendations, and providing periodic status reports, all aimed at achieving optimum results (zero harm).

· Develop and implement plans, processes, and procedures to ensure conformance with regulatory ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications, as well as company requirements and initiatives at all sites. Manage and track site Key Performance Indicators, drive site improvements toward goals, support problem resolution, and provide leadership and guidance for all sites.

· Plan and maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by establishing and enforcing security policies and procedures. Ensure the security of equipment, information, and personnel from fraud, physical assault, and robbery.

· Control and report on the various sub-processes in the area of Health and Safety and related workforce efficiency.

· Assist in achieving sustainability goals by implementing strategies to minimize environmental impact, promoting eco-friendly practices, and ensuring compliance with sustainability standards and initiatives.

· Participate in management response to incidents involving company assets. Coordinate with operations to ensure incident investigation, root-cause analysis, and action item closure are completed comprehensively and in a timely fashion.

· Work with operations to design, implement, and monitor detailed, proactive systems to prevent incidents and ensure compliance with governmental regulations/laws and company requirements, with a strong emphasis on a management systems approach to achieve a “zero incident” culture.

· Ensure the timely and accurate reporting of health and safety performance data and incidents.

· Ensure that site-specific health and safety targets are met and challenged for improvement, providing analysis and trending information to supervisors and the lead team.

· Actively participate in the investigation of HSE incidents and ensure timely and complete implementation of corrective actions.

· Develop and conduct specific site-focused Health and Safety and OHSA training and education for all employees.

· Facilitate the direct preparation and maintenance of emergency procedures for potential facility emergencies or disasters.

· Integrate HSE and quality into daily activities to allow for efficient and effective implementation.

· Create and maintain good working relationships with subordinates, peers, and managers.

· Train, develop, and motivate people in all aspects of continuous improvement, ensuring training opportunities for the development of employees into fully competent staff.

· Coordinate and facilitate the continuous risk assessment process changes, monitors, and report on effectiveness.

· Promote HSE and conduct sessions (meetings, contacts, and observations), enforcing compliance with safety and governmental regulations.

· Maintain a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by establishing and enforcing security policies and procedures; supervises the contractor security guard force.

· Conduct self-inspections and compliance audits inspections of the facility by government agencies.

 

Education and/or Experience

· Bachelor degree in Environmental Science, Public Health with a minimum of three (3) years’ work experience as a Safety Specialist or similar role.

· Technical background is preferred.

· Certification in Occupational Health and Safety is preferred.

· Proven experience in safety management.

· Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and leading incident investigations.

· Experience in conducting safety audits, inspections, and compliance assessments.

· Experienced in conducting risk assessments and developing effective mitigation strategies.

· Proficient in incident investigation and root cause analysis for corrective action planning.

Reporting structure

The Safety Specialist reports to the Health Safety and Environmental Superintendent.


Work Schedule

· The base work location is at Surmac Wanica and the working hours are from 7:30 – 16:15.

· Availability for work at various Surmac locations and customer locations.

· Availability outside standard working hours, if required.
